One of the things that Korean music does brilliantly is mind-blowing theatre, perhaps because the roots go so deep into ritual performance. Danpyunsun were a huge hit at Brighton’s Great Escape festival, especially ‘the amazingly versatile percussionist who used sticks, feet, hands, legs and arms to create the eye-opening and jaw-dropping beats’. The Guardian went for them big time: ‘they look like a totalitarian physics seminar circa 1976, and play magnificently bonkers sea shanties from weird and distant oceans, augmented by furious virtuoso violin and a sweary, hilarious frontman.’

Asian Chairshot

Asian Chairshot are one of Korean’s biggest rock bands. Their name is derived from a wrestling foul, and there is a stunning beauty in their heavy psychedelia. Smashing Pumpkins got involved with them and helped them break through at last year’s SXSW – they described their sound as ‘Black Sabbath playing Radiohead’.
