September: Chuseok month, and a special focus on Kang Ik-joong. A couple of big conferences too, and the K-Music festival kicks off. Too much happening, and I probably missed some events as well.
Festivals and family
- Totally Thames features Kang Ik-joong’s Floating Dreams on the river outside Tate Modern, all month
- The British Museum’s Chuseok festivities run from 15 – 17 September, featuring music, storytelling, crafts, a talk from Kang Ik-joong, traditional pastimes, crafts, Kpop and more
- The Korean community celebrate Chuseok in Kingston market square, 17 September.
- The British Korean Society have their special members-only Chuseok event on 15 September.
- There’s a Korean Culture Day on the Battersea Campus of the Royal College of Art on 3 September.
Exhibitions
- Kang Ik-Joong has a solo show at Robilant+Voena, 6 – 23 September.
- The KCC’s craft exhibition Make Your Movements finishes on 17 September, with a special discussion on Creative Relationships in London on 6 September.
Music
- The K-music festival opens with a fantastic concert: Nah Youn Sun with Ulf Wakenius at the Union Chapel on 20 September. Don’t miss it.
- Jeong Ga Ak Hoe perform at the British Museum’s Chuseok celebrations, 15 – 17 September.
- Idiotape and Patients rock the Rich Mix on 27 September. Don’t miss them either.
Film
- The KCC’s screenings this month are Saving my Hubby on 15 September with an introduction by Paul Quinn of Hangul Celluloid; and Scandal Makers on 29 Sept.
- C’est Si Bon screens at Deptford Cinema on 23 September
Talks and discussions
- The World Congress for Hallyu takes place in Oriel College Oxford 27 – 28 September.
- The Joint East Asian Studies Conference takes place at SOAS, 7 – 9 September.
- Beopryun Sunim talks at Birkbeck College on 9 September.
- The KCC’s Literature Night on 29 September discusses one of my favourite books, Jang Eun-jin’s No One Writes Back. (LKL review here)
