The Grand Culture Project

22-Aug-07
At the SOAS / AKS conference on 26 June, the talk by Kim Hyeon, Associate Professor of Cultural Informatics at the Academy of Korean Studies, had the title "the Korean Wave, Cultural Content and Cultural Informatics". "What on earth is Cultural Informatics?" I hear you ask. You would not be alone. But read on. The premise of the thesis runs roughly thus: Some of the biggest hallyu hits have been Joseon dynasty historical dramas. Take Dae Jang Geum and the King and the Clown. These have been great export earners for Korea, Inc. Wouldn't it be great if you could bottle the formula? But a brief look at the genesis of the King and the Clown highlights a problem in the lifecycle of a ...

BBC news video on recent London Korean Film Festival

05-Oct-06
A quick interview with Kwak Kyung-taek and Roger Clark, and a quick preview of King and the Clown, to be featured at the BFI London Film Festival. The presenter mentions that there are two other Korean films at the BFI festival. I can only find the one short film. If anyone can spot the other one (if it exists), please shout. The BBC news video is here. Thanks to Jase for telling me, and congratulations to the Korean Cultural Centre publicity machine for getting the BBC there. Get your preview ticket for the Oscars now

29-Sep-06
The booking lines open today for the BFI London Film Festival. If you want to see Korea's entry for the foreign language Oscars, the King and the Clown, book soon. I always find these film festivals a bit crazy. All those films during working hours when people with jobs can't go to see them, and then only one showing at prime-time for the really major films, so that if you're not quick off the mark you lose out. So get your ticket soon. Slim pickings at the 50th BFI London Film Festival

16-Sep-06
This year's programme has just been published. I've searched the website (and the brochure which thudded onto my doormat this morning), but I can't find much of interest to K-film fans. On the plus side, there's the King and the Clown (review on Darcy's site here). Good news. (Oct 19). This film had originally been rumoured to be included in the Korean Film Festival programme in May this year, but we speculated here that the distributors were holding the film back for this BFI festival. The distributors must now be feeling very silly, because the King and the Clown is now no longer the coolest Korean film of 2006 - this title having subsequently been seized by The Host. Anyway, it ...
