Easter celebrity round-up
22-Mar-08
It's been a while since I rounded up some of the celebrity news as an excuse for posting some pictures, so here's some recent items:
First - Brits with Korean connections:
Korea Beat has a translation of an interview with David Beckham, recently in Korea with LA Galaxy
Kate Moss gets an advertising contract with Korean fashion brand GGPX
Next, Korean celebs with Chinese actors in Hong Kong:
Jeon Do-yeon picking up Best Actress at the Asian Film Awards (for her performance in Secret Sunshine), with Tony Leung (best actor, for Lust, Caution).
And Choi Ji-woo with Chow Yun-Fat. For full explanation, visit the Marmot.
Next, Korean celebs earning money (or not) from product promotion
Rain, who has been rather invisible of late, pops up in a Nikon ...
It's a while since I did a round-up of celebrity news, which means that I've almost forgotten all the things I was going to mention, and lost most of the links that I was going to use. So before things get completely out of hand, here's one of my not-so-regular posts shamelessly plundering the celebrity blogs.
1 Bada
After my recent post defending Bada against the assaults of Popseoul I exchanged a few emails with the Popseoulites. They don't have an issue with her singing ability, just her sense of style. I'm coming round to their way of thinking, based on one of their more recent posts.
A weird vision. And the singing ability? Well, I've now listened to Made ...
I'm conscious that I haven't posted any celebrity pics for a while, so here's an update.

The relentless rise of Kim Yun-jin
MSN's recognition of Kim Yun-jin isn't quite the kiss of death that I thought it was going to be. She's now made it into the Stuff's top 100 babes. A peculiar computer-enhanced photo of her accompanies the Chosun piece:
The Chosun also reports on her new Korean film project, Seven Days, focusing on the coverage in the international media. Rain, meanwhile, not to be outdone, has made it on to a list of the world's most beautiful people.
BoA's tired feet and blind dates
You have to admire the dedication and hard work of BoA. Sacrificing her feet and love life to her ...
Photos keep celebs in the news
26-Mar-07
Our lives would be so much more drab without the occasional celebrity pic to cheer us up. So thanks are due to the paparazzi, the lads mags, the celebrity bloggers and, not least, the celebs' own PR teams, for adding spice to our daily fare. Here's some recent and not-so-recent pics.
1 Kim Yun-jin: Spot the difference
Kim Jun-jin's photos from Arena last year have been recycled into March's Maxim magazine. I hope she got the fee twice over. I must say that she looks more comfortable in Maxim. Given the fact that photographers seem to think that models look better if they're put in a wind tunnel, the blue tones on the Arena cover make you think she's going to ...
"Sorry, I'm washing my hair that night" is the familiar put-down you get when the girl of your dreams doesn't fancy a date with you. But it's also true of LKL visitors. They're much more interested in finding the best Korean hairdressers in London, or reading about the techniques involved in a "Magic Straight" perm, than in perusing articles about the biggest male celebrity in Korea (and LKL Man of the Year 2006).
I've been trawling the site statistics for the second half of 2006, and here are some of the shock facts:
Lee Sabi continues to be the most popular Korean in the known universe (or at least on my site)
In the battle of the Samsung babes, Hyolee is twice as ...
Celebrity news round-up
08-Dec-06
I haven't posted about any celebs recently, so here's the latest clips I've come across:
1 Singers turned actors
With an eye on the success of canto-pop stars on the big screen, K-pop stars and their managers have been looking to maximise brand value and revenue streams. Uhm Jung-hwa, I only recently noticed, has been prominent both as a singer and an actor for many years, while you have to have been living a fairly secluded life recently if you hadn't heard of Rain's part in Park Chan-wook's latest. So the Chosun decided to do a quick poll of the best and the worst acting talent among the former singers.
Top of the list for the boys (above) is, surprise, surprise, Rain. "He ...
Celeb news digest
01-Oct-06
By way of a Sunday colour supplement, here's a quick catch-up on some of the celeb news.
In a sure sign that her modeling career is coming to an end, Lee Sabi (left) is now doing diet videos, which are selling like hot cakes in Japan.
Cashing in on the success of Dae Jang Geum, another period costume drama is being made, featuring Ha Ji-won (right) as the kisaeng Hwang Jin-i. Ha finds the heavy wigs a pain in the neck.
To keep up her strength, she is eating eels, which are believed to be good for stamina.
Zhang Ziyi (left) has made a commercial for what appears to be Korean mineral water. She didn't need to learn many lines for it. You ...
Jeon Ji-hyun’s smooth thighs
24-Aug-06
As regular visitors to this site will know, once in a while I like to lower the tone with an unnecessary post. This post is one of them.
I'm not sure how the Chosun can tell from looking at the video of the cosmetic commercial in question, but
On stage, [Jeon Ji-hyun] shows off her singing ability and smooth thighs, with a newfound energy infusing her every move.
The cosmetics contract goes some way to compensating Jeon for the loss of the Olympus promotional contract to BoA: in 2003 she was the face of Olympus in Korea - see the Olympus site here, and some YouTubes here. In relation to the BoA commercial (still left) Olympus commented as follows:
BoA will show off her ...
Hyolee on Men’s Health cover
01-Aug-06
Last week someone accused this site of being professional and serious. I know it was probably meant as a compliment, but I realise I haven't posted anything about Lee Hyolee recently. I spotted this in the Chosun recently, and I'm hoping my friend Hye-sook has taken the hint and will bring me back a copy from Korea.
While trying to find the article again I came across a rather fun tabloid website covering Asian gossip, Asianbite, which has a section dedicated to Korean celebs. The post on Hyolee contains an image gallery (sample to the right), but unfortunately not the Maldives snaps from Men's Health. Following some links I came across a more dubious site. Because of the title of the ...
Two updates on recent stories
27-Mar-06
Lee Hyo-lee has decided that discretion is the better part of valour, and has withdrawn performances of her single which allegedly steals from Britney's work. And the Jeon Ji-hyun vehicle Daisy, in its third week in circulation, has now plummeted out of the box office top ten.
New Jeon Ji-hyun vehicle crashes
21-Mar-06
OK, so it's not a complete box office turkey, but after one week at the top of the charts, it's now down to number 4 and predicted to head south quickly. The vehicle, a film entitled Daisy, is a blatantly commercial effort to cash in on the marketability of the My Sassy Girl star outside of Korea. Directed by Hong Kong director Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs), scripted by MSG director Kwak Jae-young, also starring heart throb Jung Woo-sung, and shot entirely in Amsterdam, it seems tailor-made to appeal to the export market. But to quote from Tom Giammarco's comment posted on Koreanfilm.org,
After watching the film, one of my friends commented that it was just like watching a very long music ...
An excuse for a picture of Jeon Ji-hyun. Article from the Chosun. A pity the film itself is so rubbish.
Sorry to be a bit tabloid, but I just had to preserve this article from the Chosun Ilbo, which illustrates the Korean obsession with plastic surgery.
