Firecracker Showcase 2006

This year’s Firecracker Showcase has four Korean films:

  • Another chance to see Bong Joon-ho’s record-breaker The Host (Friday 22 September, 9:00pm, Renoir)
  • Jang Jin’s fun assassin flick Guns & Talks (Monday 18 September, 4:00pm, Curzon Soho | Friday 22 September, 6:45pm, Renoir)
  • Kim Ki-duk’s The Bow (Wednesday 20 September, 9:15pm, Curzon Mayfair) and
  • Lee Chang-dong’s Peppermint Candy (Tuesday 19 September, 4:00pm, Curzon Mayfair | Saturday 23 September, 6:30pm, Renoir).

Thanks to Jase for telling me about this (and I forgot) and to Colin Bartlett for reminding me.

The official blurb runs as follows:

Tiger Ere Firecracker Showcase

London’s Asian Film Festival
Thurs 14 – Sun 24 September 2006

Firecracker Magazine in association with Tiger Beer and FedEx Express presents the Tiger Eye Firecracker Showcase 2006, London’s Asian Film Festival.

Taking place at Curzon cinemas across central London (Soho, Mayfair and Renoir), the showcase will feature 30 movies from across Asia from Beijing to Bangkok, Indonesia to India, many of them showing in the UK for the very first time, the showcase will highlight some of the best brand new movies, plus some rediscovered gems both from the recent and the more distant past.

Special strands this year include our Firecracker Classics focus on the “other” classic Hong Kong movie studios: Cathay, where noir meets musical and the 50s retro vibe has a mambo rhythm; Pinoy Indies – the thriving indie scene of The Philippines on screen, and Bollywood blown away by the brilliant and brutal movies from the hand of Ram Gopal Varma.

We also witness the return of Nite Movies – late night movies at Curzon Soho – cops, guns, ghosts, zombies…
