Time Out previews Youn Sun Nah

Youn Sun Nah with Ulf Wakenius

Time Out provides the following encouragement to come along to The Vortex this Sunday evening:

Korean jazz singer YSN may be a new name on these shores, but she’s already clocked up six albums; her latest, “Voyage” released on prestigious German label, ACT. Here with leading Swedish guitarist Wakenius, she lets the full range of her virtuosity loose as she skips from lyrical melodies to intricate scatting, all with a beautiful delicacy and perfect timing.

And here’s the text from the Vortex website:

Guitarist Ulf Wakenius, probably best known for his collaboration with legendary pianist Oscar Peterson, but also for own productions such as his tributes to piano giants Keith Jarrett (Notes from the Heart) and Esbjörn Svensson (Love is Real), presents Youn Sun Nah, a singer who has moved audiences with her very original artistry from the famous ‘Jazz a Juan Festival’ in France, where she won the Grand Prize Award in 2005, to the Lincoln Jazz Center in New York.

A jazz singer from Korea may still seem like an exotic concept but Youn Sun Nah could change all that. As the first Korean artist exclusively under contract to ACT, anyone listening to her debut album ‘Voyage‘ will understand why.

Whether she’s scatting, singing classical or rapping, she combines artistic elements of Korean singing with the imagination of French chanson and the freedom of jazz. Some critics have likened Nah to pop-art princess Bjork, and the two do share a startling musical imagination.

They will present music from their albums including Youn Sun Nah´s new release ‘Voyage’ (ACT).

The two different perspectives are interesting. Whatever your viewpoint, it promises to be an intimate evening of very special music-making. The LKL blogmeister will be there to listen to his 2008 Album of the Year performed live.
