Chang-Rae Lee – The Surrendered
In conversation with Erica WagnerAsia House, Monday 24 May 6.45pm
In his first London appearance, award-winning Korean-American author Lee introduces his latest book, a novel of war, expatriatism and Korean culture.
In The Surrendered, the lasting memory of the Korean War changes the lives of two survivors who, when reunited in America, are forced to come to terms with their shared experiences. As the story moves between 1950’s Korea and 1980’s New York and Italy, it weaves a stunning, layered story, exploring issues of class, identity, cultural memory, loyalty, betrayal, and personal reinvention.
Chang-rae Lee is the author of the best selling Native Speaker, winner of the Hemingway Foundation/Penn Award. He teaches at Princeton University.
Erica Wagner is Literary Editor of The Times.
