The open lecture will cover the following topics and take any questions you have always wanted to know about Korean language and Korean writing systems.

  • The Origin and characteristics of Korean language
  • Korean writing systems: Origin and design principles of Korean alphabet.
  • Linguistic differences between North Korea and South Korea
  • Brief history of Korean language and modern dialects
  • How to read and write Korean alphabet

Jaehoon Yeon is Reader in Korean Language and Linguistics, and Chair of the Centre of Korean Studies at SOAS, University of London. Dr. Yeon received his B.A. and M.A. in Linguistics at Seoul National University in Korea and his Ph.D. in Linguistics at SOAS, University of London. He is the author of Korean Grammatical Constructions: Their Form and Meaning (Saffron Books, London) and the co-author of Korean: A Comprehensive Grammar (Routledge, London), Complete Korean: Teach Yourself (Hodder Education), Elementary Korean, Continuing Korean (Tuttle), and Integrated Korean: Advanced I, II (University of Hawaii Press). He has published many articles on Korean grammar and linguistics. He has been teaching Korean language and linguistics at SOAS since 1989. Dr. Yeon’s research interests include a wide range of Korean linguistics (especially morpho-syntax) and linguistic typology, Korean language pedagogy, history and structure of Korean language, and translation.

  1. Dear sir, I have just read the above regarding Korean culture and language, I would be very interested to attend one of thhese functions will you be holding anymore and if so perhaps you could let me know

    1. Unfortunately I do not maintain a mailing list of events as it’s just a step too far when this is an evening hobby for me. But if you join the London Korean Links Facebook group you get a monthly email of Korea-related events in the London area. You can always see the upcoming events on our Google calendar, or a slightly more organised listing of the current month’s events on our monthly events listing, posted on the first of every month.
