Korean artists at the 2011 London Art Fair

London Art Fair logoThe annual London Art Fair kicks off tonight in Islington, and as usual you won’t have to look far to find Korean artists represented there.

First up, I-MYU, who have been presenting young Korean artists to a London audience since 2007, will be showing the work of Shan Hur.

“When I see construction sites in the city I look at them carefully,” he says. “Walking through the debris I have feelings that are neither positive or negative because certain things have already happened and are progressing in a certain direction. Such scenes interest me as they temporarily sidestep into silence and incompleteness. I like the way something is revealed in this gap.”

Shan Hur’s work has been displayed at the Korean Cultural Centre and at the Bargehouse.

“Shan Hur’s sculptural interventions disrupt the viewer’s perception of the white cube as an art container, directly implicating the gallery space as an active element in the artwork itself. The ideas which inform his practice derive from a careful examination of construction sites and closed shops, fascinated by the moment of transition when a particular space is reconfigured for a new purpose. During this transition the polished veneer of the city is temporarily removed, thereby exposing its farcical nature, and the mechanisms by which this veneer is generated.” says Marius Granger.

I-MYU are exhibiting in the Projects Space, stand P11.

Down the Project Space aisle at stand P17 is Hanmi Gallery. Gallerist Heashin Kwak will be showing two Korean artists – I’ll post the names here once I get the press release.

You can usually rely on Union Gallery and Albemarle Gallery to have some Korean representation. This year Union (on stand 2) will be showing work by Soo Kyung Yee (right). As they also represent Sea Hyun Lee and Jinyoung Yu there’s a small chance there might be some of their works too. Albemarle (stand G18) are currently exhibiting work by Lee Jae-hyo and Kim Yeon in their “Shine Artists” group show in their Albemarle Street gallery. The London Art Fair website has no info as to which artists they will be including at the Islington event. Wolseley Fine Arts (who have represented Anna Paik) and Purdy Hicks will also be present – they represent Bae Chan-hyo – but it looks like Purdy Hicks won’t have any Korean works this time round.

London Art Fair is always a fun event, and well worth a browse. It runs from 19 to 23 January at the Business Design Centre in Islington.
