Korean Miracle: A Cultural Evolution - poster

Globalisation energised Korea’s industries, the foreign population in Korea trebled in under a decade and South Koreans became the third largest group of foreign students enrolled at US universities (behind India and China whose populations eclipse Korea’s 50 million). Korea has fundamentally changed, not only politically and economically, but reformed Korean society now accepts more diversity and is quick to shed old prejudices. The praise for Korea’s progress is plentiful. However, as the country is held as a model for growth and development, little attention has been paid to the adverse side effects of such spontaneous and rapid expansion, change and reform.

The five artists featured in this exhibition, Bae Joonsung, Gwon Osang, Hong Sungchul, Je Baak and Kim Hyuen Jun, are products of this reform as their coming-of-age coincided with this rapid period of change in Korea. These artists explore the issues that permeate this new Korean society: consumerism, materialism and the conflict between traditional eastern values and new western values. They also pose a critical question, forcing our examination of Korea today: What is contemporary Korean culture?
