The Film

The 2012 Korean Film Night is proud to present the work of 12 of Korea’s leading Directors with a dynamic selection of weekly screenings throughout the year.

The film intercuts two stories, one in black and white, one in colour. From 1965 to 1970, we follow Jeon Tae-il, a poor young man who quits street vending to work in a garment factory. Amid appalling work conditions, he buys a law book, seeks government help, forms an association, talks to reporters. When conditions don’t change, he takes a dire step. Five years later, a young couple follow Tae-il’s path: pregnant Shin Jung-Soon tries to organize a union in her garment factory. She’s harassed, then beaten. Her husband, Kim Yong-Su, an intellectual in hiding from Park Chung Hee’s repressive regime, is writing Tae-il’s story.

The Director

Park Kwang-su is a director whose name you may not have heard of but whose influence on Asian cinema you certainly will have. In the 1980’s he founded the Seoul Film Group which had links to the student protests that came to define the era before helping to establish the Busan International Film Festival as well as leading the Busan Film Commission. In between all of which Park Kwang-su created a body of cinematic work that made him a role model for the many young Korean film directors who have followed along the path that he forged for them.
