James Scarth Gale – missionary, translator, and one of the founders of the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch – was born 150 years ago on 19 February 1863. His birthday has been marked by an upgraded Wikipedia page, a special page with photos on Brother Anthony’s site, and a memorial service at Yeondong Church (which he founded) on Sunday 17 February in the presence of his two grand-daughters, at which a memorial hall was inaugurated.
This must rank as a very important milestone in the Western study of Korea.
Hi, Just found your website through Br Anthony’s published ‘Eerie Tales from Old Korea’ which he has kindly sent me … interested as I’m one of JSG’s grandaughters as mentioned above!
Hi
I’m looking forward to reading those tales. If postage from Korea wasn’t so expensive I’d have read them already!
