Abstract

The Korean wave, also named Hallyu, has been feeding the interest Europeans have in Korean culture. The most visible signs of it are the Korean TV drama, and of course, K-pop music and its idols. Korean cinema has also been gaining momentum with the recognition of its directors through film festivals, but also the active promotion of the KOFIC. For some reasons, Korean genre films have been more widely appreciated in the West. Ryoo Seung-wan, who just came for the UK premiere of his latest hit, The Berlin File, at the Terracotta Film Festival, is an emblematic director of this generation of genre films. A specialist of action movies, he is one of the few who managed to build themselves a niche audience in the foreign markets. No Blood, No Tears is regarded as the film which opened up a successful career for him. As Jeon Do-yeon who is also subject of a cycle of film screenings at the KCCUK, it is the perfect time to screen this film, and question ourselves what could make a Korean film really successful in the United Kingdom and appeal to British audiences.
