Korean artists (and award-winners) at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is now in its last week. And as ever, if you look closely at the catalogue, or have an eye for particular artists’ work, you will find a number of works by London-based Korean artists.

Two years, Kwon Daehoon won the Jack Goldhill Award for sculpture at the exhibition, and so it was good to see one of his works exhibited again, from his Chalna series – a girl waiting (as so many of his subjects do) by a pillar box, drained of colour and seemingly of energy too.

Ryu Changwoo: St James’s Park (via Choi and Lager)

Another black and white work immediately recognisable was Ryu Changwoo’s humorous giclée print St James’s Park, which served as the publicity picture for Choi and Lager’s group exhibition in Paris last year.

Kim Shin-wook: Matley Wood 2 (2012)

Possibly more eye-catching is Kim Shin-wook’s photo of Matley Wood: it certainly caught the attention of the judges, winning him a British Institution Award of £1,000 from the Trustees of the British Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts in the UK. A ghostly tree stands out against a darkened landscape, as if caught in a car’s headlights.

Another prize-winning project was Lee Changyeob’s Synth[e]tech[e]cology – a futuristic vision of London’s BT Tower reformatted as a pollution filter. Read more over on the Dezeen Magazine website.

Park Heechan’s pencil drawings of an Experimental Toy Factory, adjacent to Lee Changyeob’s work in the architectural gallery, completes the collection of Korean works at the exhibition.
