The Ghosts of Jeju to screen at SOAS

Those who are eager to watch Jiseul (and here’s hoping it will be getting a London screening soon) will want to watch this documentary to fill in some of the background. It also provides context to the protests about the Gangjeong naval base.

Regis Tremblay’s powerful documentary film details the massacre of up to 60,000 civilians by US commanded forces on Jeju Island, South Korea in 1948, in response to islanders’ objection to US instigated partitioning of the Korean peninsular. Against this tragic history the film examines the current fierce resistance to the construction of a huge naval base on Jeju, part of Obama’s ‘pivot to Asia’. Essential viewing for all interested in peace issues and Korean and East Asian history, politics and current affairs.

This event is open to SOAS students and the public.
