Symposium: A Banquet of Korean Contemporary Art — The 6th Exhibition by 4482 (Sasapari)

Sasapari, a group show with usually more than 40 artists, is a phenomenal organisational feat. Hence it’s hardly a surprise if one year – as in 2013 – they take a break. But they’re back again this year, and once again 40 artists will be taking over the Bargehouse.

Given the break, there are a lot of new names this year. But there’s still one or two familiar names, with the veteran Bae Chanhyo the only artist who has exhibited on every occasion since the start, way back in 2007.

press release

4482 (Sasapari) is delighted to present Symposium: A Banquet of Korean Contemporary Art. This year we have joined our forces with 40 Korean contemporary artists from various vocations showcasing a wide array of medium. We hope that it will be a unique platform for participating artists to present their art works they have produced since they have come to practice in the UK.

The 40 artists have created a symposium through their artworks expressing and unrav¬eling their artistic practice in the UK. The 6th exhibition by 4482 (Sasapari) presents an unusual opportunity for the artists and the audience to enjoy the show as if they were in a banquet; ‘tasting’ each artwork by sharing with each other. It is our aim to provide a place where discussions can take place based on the artworks that are displayed as well as for the audience to enjoy them visually.

Symposium creates a dialogue between the artists to illustrate how much or little their artistic practices reflect the foreign culture they face in difference doses and period of time. It is then up to the audience to interact with the artworks to experience a different kind of dialogue. Audience are encouraged to interact both with each other and artists on site to discuss how the artworks have been created and whether they were affected by cultural changes and how much influence it has on artists’ process of making art.
