The title of the exhibition looks like a code. It is, in fact, a combination of three country codes, that of South Korea, France and England.The title is a reference to « 4482 », a Korean artists’ annual group show that takes place in London each year ever since its beginning in 2008. The exhibition now takes place as one of the many successful events of the British Art scene. It offers an opportunity to think about the way in which the Korean artist, coming from a different cultural background, looks upon the western society he lives in, and gives consistency to issues such as identity and cultural adhesion that have inspired more than one Korean artist adapting to western culture. It was also an opportunity for small groups of these foreign artists to show their work and test the potential of their network.
The Choi & Lager project is happy to announce its 4th Korean Artists’ group show will be gathering artists from France, England and Korea once more, as we have been doing each year since 2011.
Globalization has lead to a dynamic cultural exchange on an international basis but for Korean artists, the doorway to western art scene is still quite narrow. We hope that this exhibition will offer an introduction to various works of Korean artists who are active in the international art world.
The list of artworks for this year’s Choi & Lager project in Paris includes a piece from ‘The Show Must Go On’, a promotional project by the Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul. Curated by Total Museum’s chief curator Bo Seul Shin, the project consists of a luggage which contains presentations of Korean artists’ works. This luggage travels around the world and introduces Korean artists during seminars and roundtables.
Many artists are overwhelmed by the feeling of helplessness following the recent Sewol ferry disaster and are wondering « what can Art do under such circumstances? » We wish to express our deepest sympathy for the victims of Sewol ferry and invite you to share our reflection on the functions of Art through the works of artists in mourning. Art is often thought to be unable to give practical solutions to problems and crisis in reality. It is Art, however, that gives us the perspective we need in order to see our lives and societies from a different angle and heal our inner wounds.
