Andersen’s Gazes – a dance collaboration as part of Seoul in the City

This should be an entertaining and rewarding contribution to the Seoul in the City programme of the City of London Festival: a collaboration between a leading Korean dance company and artist Mari Kim. Mari Kim’s pop art is sometimes to be seen at the Albemarle Gallery, and it will be interesting to see how it works on stage. She has a background in design and animation. Expect big, bold colours complementing the dancers’ movements.

Some of her work features themes from fairy tales, so she is an ideal partner on a project which focuses on one of the West’s favourite storytellers. She has also collaborated with K-pop girl band 2NE1 – so this evening should appeal to a wide range of tastes.

Andersons Gazes 1

The second of the Andersen series by Lee Kyung-ok dance company tells the story of Hans Christian Andersen’s life through his tales. Hans Christian Andersen, famed Danish writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, is best remembered for his fairy-tales which have become a strong part of Western European culture. His stories, which include The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and The Emperor’s New Clothes, express themes that transcend age and nationality. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films, and now the Korean company of Lee Kyung-ok will explore these tales through contemporary dance – exploring man’s multiplicity through Andersen’s stories, and through his unique gaze.
