London-based South Korean artist Shin Meekyoung won the 2015 Prudential Eye Award in the sculpture category, at a cemerony held in Singapore on 20 January this year. The Prudential Eye Awards were launched in 2014 by the Prudential Eye Programme, a partnership between Parallel Contemporary Art, Saatchi Gallery and Prudential – the collaboration which also brought you Korean Eye. The inaugural awards were staged on 18 January 2014 at Suntec City, Singapore. The annual awards focus on emerging artists from across Greater Asia and highlight the breadth, range and diversity of the works being made by emerging Asian artists. In partnership with the Saatchi Gallery they enable the work of these artists to reach audiences and receive international exposure.
This year, a new special award for Visual Culture recognizing creativity that blurs the borders of art and shows a contemporary aesthetic drive across cultural products was handed to Big Bang member T.O.P. The Joongang Daily article linked below explains some of the background to T.O.P’s award. YG Entertainment, T.O.P’s agency, said that the singer/actor will launch his own line of furniture sometime in the near future in collaboration with furniture company Vitra.
Shin Meekyoung has a solo exhibition at HADA Contemporary starting on 5 February.
