Google Korea remembers Hwang Sun-won

Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of Hwang Sun-won’s birth on 26 March, 1915. Google Korea celebrated with one of their doodles, illustrating Hwang’s most well-known story, The Shower (소나기, 1959).

The story was adapted as a movie by Lee Jin-mo in 1978; and Studio Meditation with Pencil is currently working on an animated version, which we’re looking forward to.

  1. I have always wanted to read this book. However, my korean reading level is really slow. Do they have any english translation on this book? i have been dying to read one since i heard about it on a korean variety show and been searching for the book ever since. i have found one but the book is in korean language. can anybody tell me where i can get the english translation of this book?

    1. You have two choices.

There is a translated anthology which you can pick up second-hand for around £22

I do a quick review of the collection here:

Or there’s a new translation (given the title “Cloudburst”) in a boxed set (Bi-lingual Edition Modern Korean Literature Set 7)

Seoul Selection used to sell the titles individually for KRW10,000 or 15,000 each. But looking at their website they don’t seem to do that any more. You could try emailing them to check.

If you find any others, let me know
