Join us on Thursday, June 18 for our first New Malden community event, ‘Refugee Week: North Koreans living in the UK’ – a celebration of the largest North Korean community in Europe. All New Malden residents are encouraged to come and meet their neighbours, learn about asylum issues faced by North Koreans in the UK, and build friendships.
This event, which is hosted by the European Alliance for Human Rights in North Korea, will take place during Refugee Week 2015 and will mark the release of our paper ‘A Case for Clarification: European Asylum Policy and North Korean Refugees’, which explores the unfair treatment of North Korean refugees seeking asylum in a country of their choice.
Maurice Wren, Director of the British Refugee Council, will kick things off with a speech about refugee issues in the UK. Jiyoung Kang, North Korean refugee, will share her experiences of seeking asylum in the UK. The speeches will be concluded by EAHRNK’s James Burt, who will discuss our policy paper. Following a short Q&A session, there will be an opportunity for informal discussion.
Translation will be provided in English and Korean.
