For the first season of Korean cultural courses of 2017 the KCCUK is entering into a partnership with Kingston Adult Education. Courses will be held in the King Charles Centre, Hollyfield Road, Surbiton KT5 9AL. This term, dance and cuisine are added to the list of things you can learn.
All four courses have ten weekly classes, at a cost of £100 per course.

Korean Calligraphy ‘Seoyeh’
Korean Calligraphy or ‘Seoyeh’ is a traditional method of artistic writing. It is commonly created with a pen or brush dipped in black ink. Seoyeh is known to calm & soothe the spirit. This course involves an essential calligraphy technique related to a visual art of writing the Korean alphabet, which is known as Hangul. You will learn how to hold the brush, write a stroke and study 24 consonants and vowels of Hangul. You will develop concentration and patience whilst developing the correct seating posture.
This course is suitable for all levels with an enthusiasm for calligraphy. Korean language proficiency is not necessary.
Korean Cuisine ‘Hansik’
Korean food is some of the healthiest on earth, with an emphasis on vegetables, meats cooked simply and without much oil, and a near obsession with the fermented vegetable kimchi, which can be something of an acquired taste for non-Koreans.
A wide variety of fermented offerings make Korean food stand out from the cuisines of its geographical neighbours. The positive health effects of fermented foods are a current study.
This is an introductory course to Korean cuisine. Based on a series of tasting sessions and discussions, you will learn about various aspects of Korean food and ingredients including fermented ingredients, Korean desserts, street food, Buddhist cuisine, and of course, Kimchi!
Korean Traditional Dance
An introduction to traditional Korean dance, its rhythms and essence, with a focus on the dance and music skills of the dynamic Sogo dance (Sogo = a small drum, Chum = dance). Learn the basic steps to understand fundamental principles such as: the special ways of breathing, body alignment, a feeling of suspension, the way of playing Sogo, and the heaviness and curvilinear shapes of movements. Enhance your muscular strength, flexibility, and the ability to consciously perceive and analyse internal and external movements.
Suitable for all levels with an enthusiasm for dance. The class is structured around a warm up & movement sequences, followed by learning a Korean traditional sogo (drum) dance. Sogo will be provided to the learners as part of the course.
Korean Patchwork ‘Jogakbo’
Jogakbo is the name given to traditional Korean patchwork; a discipline that expresses Korea’s sense of beauty & creativity. Passed down from generations for six centuries, the craft has been used to create various household items with materials sourced from leftover cloth. Contemporary Jogakbo is popular and used for designs of everyday accessories such as bags, pouches, tea ware covers & table runners, etc.
Learn to make a 4 square pin cushion, 9 Jogakbo, a Doupion silk lotus teaware cover, circle/flower bud pin-cushion, a mini table runner, tea ware Bojagi, a Jogakbo thimble, Gui pocket & a patterned money cover. A course suitable for those with enthusiasm for craft & needlework at all levels of ability. Additional costs for materials will be incurred for personal projects.
