Age of Shadows

The latest from the award-winning Kim Jee-Woon, The Age of Shadows is a slick, suspension-fuelled espionage thriller featuring an all-star cast.

Based on real events, the action takes place during Japanese-occupied Korea of the 1920s, when the fight for freedom became as dangerous as it was highly sought-after. Song Kang-ho plays Lee Jung-Chool, a Korean police captain in the Japanese police force with a special mission: infiltrate and deceive the armed resistance fighting for independence.

This band of rebels is lead by the charismatic Kim Woo-jin (Gong Yoo), who is dedicated to destroying key facilities in Seoul by any means necessary. With both men standing on opposing sides, each knowing the identity and intentions of the other, a cat-and-mouse game begins to ensue – one in which not everyone will make it out alive.

Also starring Lee Byung-hun and Han Ji-min, this is a blistering spectacle from a master filmmaker at the top of his game.

Soda Pictures is an Anglo-Canadian film distributor of art house, independent and world cinema. Established in London in 2002 by Eve Gabereau and Edward Fletcher, the company releases 25+ films a year and has a library of over 300 films from all corners of the world.

  1. I thought I might have written a proper review of this somewhere, but no. It’s a good pot-boiler, but if you’ve seen Choi Dong-hoon’s 2015 colonial era thriller The Assassination (암살) then you don’t need to see this, which covers pretty much the same ground but is less memorable. Stern(7,g)

Eastern Kicks has reviewed it three times, with two reviews sharing the above 7 out of 10 rating (Andrew Heskins | James Mudge) and one giving it a generous 9 out of 10 (Harris Dang).
