Event news: panel talk on poetry translation

In conjunction with the collaborative event between South Korean and British poets on 3 June, the KCCUK is hosting a discussion on the topic of literary translation.

1. Kim Minjung is a poet and chief editor at the publishing house ‘Munhakdongne’. Her book of poetry First Time, That Woman Feeling won the 17th annual Contemporary Poetry Prize. ‘Amongst all current voices in Korean contemporary poetry’ Jake Levine commented that “She is the loudest and most humorous. She employs slang, cultural references, and ‘naughty, unwomanly’ language in order to challenge readers to expand their ideas of not only what a poem is, but also how women should speak, and what they should say.”

2. Hwang Yuwon is a poet. He received a B.A in Religious Studies and Philosophy from Sogang University and is currently studying for his PhD in Indian Philosophy at Dongguk University. His book of poetry Everything in the World, Maximized won the Kim Soo-young prize.

3. Sung Kiwan is a poet and musician who is a member of a band called AASSA (Afro Asian Ssound Act). He studied at Seoul National University, College of Humanities, Department of French Language and Literature. B.A. and M.A. He has published 4 poetry books and directed the Seoul Fringe Festival, DMZ 2000 (millennium celebration project with Nam Jun Paik held in Korea’s DMZ area), and several feature length movies.

4. Steven J Fowler is a poet and artist. He works in the modernist and avant-garde traditions, across poetry, fiction, theatre, sonic art, visual art, installation and performance. He has published various collections of poetry and text, and has been commissioned by Tate Modern, BBC Radio 3, The British Council, Tate Britain, Liverpool Biennial and the Welcome Collection. He has been translated into 21 languages and performed at venues across the world, from Mexico City to Erbil, Beijing to Tbilisi. He is the poetry editor of 3am Magazine, a Lecturer at Kingston University, he teaches at Tate Modern and is the curator of the Enemies project.

5. Hannah Silva is a poet, playwright and performer known for her innovative explorations of form, voice and language in performance. Her work explores a wide range of subjects: from political rhetoric (Opposition) to paranormal science (Total Man), teenage sexual identity (Orchid) to long distance running (Marathon Tales). Her current performance, Schlock!, is a meditation on pain, the body and the self, consent, complicity and ownership, splicing the language of Fifty Shades of Grey with a novel by Kathy Acker. Schlock! premiered at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival and is performed using British Sign Language, soundscapes and poetry.
