SOAS daegeumKorean traditional music, known as gugak, has a rich history of over two thousand years with a distinct repertoire and idiom. With the global popularity of Korean pop culture, traditional music is currently riding on a revival wave. Korean traditional instruments are divided into the main categories of wind, string and percussion. For this workshop, we are inviting renowned musicians/academics from Korea specialising in each of these categories to provide personalised group lessons. The instruments covered will include gayageum (12-string zither), daegeum/tanso (bamboo flutes) and janggu (hour-glass drum). But you are invited to try out Korean modes and rhythms on your own instrument The sessions will explore the main concepts in Korean music and basic rhythmic patterns, as well as virtuosic techniques on each of the instruments. On the final evening there will be a special interactive concert involving the instructors from Korea and the course participants. This is a rare and valuable opportunity to obtain first-hand instruction from masters in the Korean traditions, so do come and experience the unique gugak world!

You are welcome to bring your own instrument, but instruments will be provided. Beginners welcome. This workshop is a one-off, made possible by the kind support of the Academy of Korean Studies. With Hyelim Kim.
