Young In Hong: The Moon’s Trick
Exeter Phoenix | Bradninch Place | Gandy Street | Exeter EX4 3LS
Fri 02 Mar 2018 – Sun 22 Apr 2018 | 10.30am – 5pm daily | free
Exhibition Preview: Thu 1 March | 6-8pm | freeA solo exhibition by South Korean artist Young In Hong that encompasses drawing, textiles, sound installation and performance, to explore processes and ideas around authorship, translation and reinterpretation.
Hong’s large-scale hand-and-machine embroidered textile works are based on archival imagery pertaining to moments of collective experience of protest and demonstration in recent Korean history and allude to the politics and economics of the (predominantly female) global textiles industry.
Her most recent works reinterpret elements drawn from pre- and post-war photographs as the components of a musical score. Interpreted in turn by the artist and by other musicians, these scores form the basis of new sound works that play within the exhibition space.
The exhibition was initiated by Spacex in partnership with Exeter Phoenix and forms part of the Korean Cultural Centre UK’s Korea/UK season 2017-18, a celebration of the relationship between the UK and Korea which sees cultural events, exhibitions and activities taking place in both countries throughout 2017/18.
