Bamseom Pirates Seoul Inferno

“Whereas other bands smash up expensive guitars, we use rubbish”

What happens when you make absurdist art out of garbage? BAMSEOM PIRATES, SEOUL INFERNO is a documentary about when a wildly anti-music collaboration between two friends ends up colliding with state law head on. What begins as a document of a simultaneously slapstick and ruthlessly political South Korean grind band unfurls after a friend of the band is arrested under National Security Law and charged with promoting North Korea. The film’s subjects are suddenly picked apart on national TV and the situation begins to ask wider questions of everyone involved. How much of the band is serious? Who does censorship really work for? Most importantly, why would two smart people make this horrible fucking noise to begin with?

Previously featured as a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it screening at London’s 2017 Korean Film Festival, acclaimed director Jung Yoon-Suk (Non Fiction Diary) presents a mixture of radical anti-venue performance, unspoken psychic friendship and maximalist sequences of graphic design. ALWAYS RESTRICTIONS is pleased to bring this vital work back to London for a rare screening outside of the festival circuit.
