The Resonanz Duo aim to explore the different sound worlds of flute and marimba, always seeking new ways to contrast and combine the two instruments. Their repertoire spans from the baroque to the contemporary, and they aim to continually expand the possibilities for this unusual ensemble. Laura Davies (flute) and Hyungi Lee (marimba) are both on scholarships to the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music respectively and formed their duo during their time at The Purcell School.

Hyungi Lee

Born in South Korea in 1996 and has been studying percussion for 7 years. She reached the semi-finals of the 2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition and was awarded the Walter Todd Bursary for her performance. She won the first prize in the International Marimba Congress and Competition 2014 (Age II) held in Bamberg, Germany. And recently she won the RCM Percussion Competition twice in 2016 and 2017 and she won the runner-up prize at the Karl Jenkins Award 2017. She was awarded the Leaver’s award in honour of Arthur Felsenstein from The Purcell School and an ABRSM scholarship from the Royal College of Music. She is also part of the RCM’s award-winning percussion quartet PERC’M having recently toured with them around Britain with marimba virtuoso Eric Sammut and Anders Astrand.

Laura Davies

Laura Davies began learning flute when she was eight and at ten was awarded a scholarship to The Purcell School. She has since won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music. As a member of the Purcell School Symphony Orchestra, Laura has performed at the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Sage Gateshead and given solo and chamber performances at Wigmore Hall, Buckingham Palace and St Martin-in-the-Fields. Laura was principal flute for the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, with whom she has performed at the Barbican and on tour to Poland. She has worked with musicians such as Peter Maxwell Davies, Paul Daniel, Hans Gruber, and John Rutter. She regularly performs with the Janus Ensemble and looks forward to performing Malcolm Arnold’s Concertino with them at the Malcolm Arnold Festival in October.
