2019 Independence Day Korean Festival in New Malden

The celebrations by the Korean community are often a word-of-mouth thing. Everyone knows they’re going to happen — at least, everyone in the Korean community — but no-one seems to want to publicise it to non-Koreans.

So credit to Wook Kim for posting a video about the upcoming New Malden celebrations on Facebook. The festivals that mark Independence Day (15 August) used to happen at the Fairfield Recreation Ground in Kingston, but have now migrated to New Malden. Last year they were in the space behind the Glasshouse Pub, but this year they have moved up a gear: they will be taking over New Malden High Street on 17 August.

The activities are scheduled kick off around 11am, presumably with welcoming speeches from the dignitaries – last year Ambassador Park was the main VIP, in her first public engagement in the UK. The entertainments will continue with food, kimchi-making, K-pop cover and dance performances, performances from the Korean senior citizens group and more. The festivities are likely to come to an end mid- to late-afternoon.

Update: Wook Kim has now turned his video into a Facebook event which contains more detail on the days events:
