“He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future.”

George Orwell

Past + Present Tense

Works of art are an interpretation or reinterpretation of the world filtered through the imagination and creativity of the artists who present the work. Neither the work nor the artist exists in a vacuum. The aesthetic choices taken by artists reflect how they negotiate and build meaning with unique relationships to their histories, universal relationships and a new perspective on how our pasts are preserved and presented today.

Artists in one way or another are concerned with or consider historic moments, ideas, notions of what the world is, and how it should be framed. They play an important and often unquestioned role in constructing ideologies and interpreting cultural identities. Offering a distant gaze, highlighting the ambiguous spaces where notions of fact and fiction can fuse from past to present, which in turn set the ground for the future.

Drawing upon their own histories and influences, for this exhibition artists produced a work that is reflective of the past, exists in the present and ultimately offers a stepping stone or a building block to the future. Repurposed works, objects, old and new work, reinterpreting and transforming both ideas and developments are presented in an environment that is steeped in history. The Crypt of St. Pancras Church is a remnant and a reflection on the past that has been itself repurposed for a present usage as an art gallery.
