Abstract

‘Engagement’ of a kind may have replaced ‘fire and fury’ on the Korean Peninsula after Kim Jong-un met with the US President Donald Trump. But there is, as yet, not a peace process either. Arguably China remains the Great Power with most leverage on the Peninsula, and as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council it has a responsibility, under Article 24 of the UN Charter, ‘for the maintenance of international peace and security’.

What is China’s strategy in the Korean Peninsula? How do Seoul and Pyongyang see the role of China? What should we expect of China’s role in helping to bring about peace and development on the Korean Peninsula?

Panellists

Panel Chair: Professor Steve Tsang (Director, SOAS China Institute)
Dr Tat Yan Kong (SOAS)
Dr Adam Cathcart (Leeds)
Mr John Everard (Former UK ambassador to North Korea, 2006 – 2008)
