Ji Sun-tak

Ji Sun Tak, pre-eminent Korean Master Potter (1912 – 1993), dedicated his life restoring and developing the traditional Korean ceramic art. Deemed a Living National Treasure in his lifetime, he remains still today one of the most influential potters in modern Korean ceramics.

Ji Sun Tak believed that “the gist of Korean beauty lies in porcelain” regretting the extinction of the distinction of Korean porcelain.

Unfortunately, they were not much left of the inherited techniques from previous era.

In his effort to revive the tradition of Korean ceramic, Ji Sun Tak spent much of the 1940s and 50s researching the historic kiln sites research enabled him to achieve a profound understanding of both the technical skills and the aesthetics of the Joseon period.

Following his sold out first solo exhibition in 1952 sold, he received numerous invitations every year to exhibit in Japan and all over the world.

Having won numerous international prizes he went on founding the Goryeo Do-yo kiln site in Icheon City which is now recognised as the most prestigious ceramic centre in Korea.

Now, Han Collection is delighted to present the work of outstanding ceramic achievements of the master Ji Sun Tak. As a ceramicist responsible for reviving the Korean Koryo and Joseon ceramic techniques this exhibition will display the fruit of his lifelong efforts, highlighting through his work the valuable cultural legacy of Korea all over the world.
