The 2020 KCC Artist of the Year exhibition featuring Jewyo Rhii was of course a victim of the intermittent Covid lockdown. Even though the exhibition was, at various times that I can no longer remember, theoretically open to the public, there wasn’t much public around in Central London to visit it.

I managed to pay a brief visit during December: it was, I think, the last day before the Christmas lockdown, and I decided to take the day off from the seemingly interminable but pressurised tedium of working from home to do some Christmas shopping, have lunch at a Korean restaurant and catch this KCC exhibition.

Anyone who has seen Jewyo Rhii’s work before will know that it is a complete devil to display — it takes up so much space — and therefore when it is not on display it must be absolutely freaking impossible to commit to storage. Unless she has the use of a spare aircraft hangar, the artist must surely have to dismantle her carefully soldered-together pieces and other Heath Robinson style installations, and commit them to meticulously labeled storage containers so that she can reassemble them another day, at another exhibition.

The exhibition at the KCC blended the two scenarios: fully installed works combined with works that had been partially or fully disassembled and stored away in racks or packing cases.

Love Your Depot was at the KCCUK 28 October 2020 – 20 March 2021
