Hwang Seontae

Pontone Gallery is delighted to present a new collection of meticulously crafted lightboxes from Korean sculptor, Hwang Seontae. Sunlight floods through crisply delineated window openings into domestic architectural spaces that speak of order and calm contemplation. Unoccupied, these rooms evoke a sense of imminent arrival or recent departure, emphasizing the sanctuary of ‘home’.

In Hwang Seontae’s distinctive sculptures, technical precision meets poetic stillness. Through a meticulous process of printing, etching, and layering, Seontae constructs serene scenes often depicting minimalist contemporary interiors juxtaposed with lush natural landscapes. His works evoke a quiet sense of suspension – moments frozen in time that explore themes of departure, return, and the space in between.

Hwang Seontae was born in South Korea in 1972. He studied fine art at Kyunghee University in South Korea and went on to train in Sculpture at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle in Germany, where he completed his postgraduate study, specialising in Glass Art. He has exhibited in South Korea, the USA and Europe, showing numerous times in the UK, where he is exclusively represented by The Pontone Gallery.
