The Novus String Quartet was formed at the Korean National University for the Arts in 2007, and is currently Artist in Residence at the Wigmore Hall. As part of this residency they are focusing on works from the 1920s and by the Second Viennese School. Another concert will be coming on 26 May.
The quartet will also be down in Haslemere on 18 March playing:
Britten — Three Divertimenti for String Quartet
Janáček — String Quartet no. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata”
Dvořák — String Quartet no. 12 in F major, Op. 96 “American”
Novus String Quartet play Britten, Janáček and Shostakovich at the Wigmore Hall
Programme
Benjamin Britten (1913-1976): 3 Divertimenti for string quartet
Leoš Janáček (1854-1928): String Quartet No. 1 ‘Kreutzer Sonata’
INTERVAL
Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975): String Quartet No. 9 in E flat Op. 117
Written in 1923, Janáček’s piece was inspired not only by Tolstoy’s novella but also the composer’s passionate love for the much younger (and married) Kamila Stösslová. The other works – Britten’s three little pieces and the Shostakovich quartet – date from 1933 and 1964 respectively.
