Born in Seoul, South Korea, Paik studied drawing and painting with the leading figurative American painters, Sidney Goodman and Will Barnet at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Honoured with merit scholarships, Paik also won numerous prestigious prizes including the highly coveted William Cresson European Travelling Prize, Benjamin West Prize and Thomas Eakins Prize among others. Paik had exhibited in New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia before her subsequent move to London due to her marriage to concert pianist Leon McCawley in 1997.
Along with solo exhibitions in London, Paik has participated in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ Annual Exhibition, New English Art Club at the Mall Galleries, the Summer Exhibition at RA, BP Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Garrick/Milne Prize exhibitions at Christie’s in London. In 2003 Paik won the first prize in the Garrick/Milne Prize, a national painting competition, for her painting titled “Rehearsal at RADA”, voted unanimously by the body of jury members which included both the previous Surveyor and the present Surveyor to the Queen’s Pictures. The winning painting now hangs in the Garrick Club’s Permanent Art Collection in London. Paik’s favourite subject matters are nudes, still-life and portraiture. In pursuit of paintings of depth and timelessness, always experimenting, Paik works to capture the lasting power of life with personal symbolism.
