Bomi Kim (b.1998) is a South Korean painter based in London and Seoul. Bomi’s paintings are an extension of her poetry. In her paintings Bomi explores the human condition from her perspective. From her writing several versions of herself emerge depending on time and place. Having grown up between Korea, Thailand and the UK her work is inspired by the different environments and cultures and the impact they have on her personality.
Bomi’s paintings explore the themes of her poetry: birth, love, death, longing and the legacy of our parents. Bomi extends the three dimensional nature of poetry into her paintings as she imagines visual scenes whilst she reads. The visual manifestation of themes and characters are inspired by combinations of spontaneous observations such as people on the street, fabrics and texture of furniture and the natural environment.
Her paintings are influenced by the presiding factors that constitute the moment in which they are made: her state of mind, the natural light, spontaneous visual stimuli. In this way her paintings come to life through a series of moments that seem to inevitably occur. They become complete when they are shown to others.
