Sun-Mi Hong makes two appearances at the Vortex this month, first as part of a quartet led by Ant Law and Alex Hitchcock – with whom she collaborated for the first time at K-Music 2022 – and then at the end of the month leading her own quintet:

2 March: Same Moon in the Same World

Ant Law – Guitar | Alex Hitchcock – Tenor Saxophone | Jasper Høiby – Double Bass | Sun-Mi Hong – Drums

Ant Law, Alex Hitchcock, Jasper Høiby and Sun-Mi Hong

Ant & Alex join forces with bass hero Jasper Høiby and drum legend Sun-Mi Hong. They’ll be exploring entirely new music from the NEXT ‘Same Moon In The Same World’ album – which they are recording the two days after this concert. This is cutting edge contemporary jazz from the leading lights on the scene. Expect excitement and dynamic, joyous music!

29 March: Sun-Mi Hong Quintet

Sun-Mi Hong – Drums | Alistair Payne – Trumpet | Nicolò Ricci – Tenor Saxophone | Chaerin Im – Piano | Alessandro Fongaro – Double bass

Sun-Mi Hong

Born and raised in Incheon, Korea; Sun-Mi has a unique perspective of life after her last ten years in Amsterdam. With a signature of rooted groove in combination with well tempered outbursts, Sun-Mi has placed herself strongly in the Dutch jazz scene. By approaching the moment in a somewhat meditative fashion, she achieves the ability to bring something entirely original to the band stand.

Her last album ‘A Self-Strewn Portrait’ (ZenneZ Records) has won the prize of the Edison Award 2021 in National category. She is the winner of the Dutch Jazz Competition 2018 and the 2nd Prize of the Getxo International Jazz Competition 2017 (Sun-Mi Hong Quintet), She just released a new album with her quintet on Edition Records on the 18th of November 2022.

The Sun-Mi Hong Quintet is an emerging addition to the European scene of improvised and contemporary jazz music. The Quintet walks the line between elaborate composition and the great void that is improvised music.
