It’s been a while since we last had one of these events on Kingston’s Fairfield Recreation Ground. Around 20 years ago, the celebrations used to be at the end of June, coinciding, whether intended or not, roughly with the anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Then it moved to mid August, coinciding roughly with national liberation day. But as far as we’re aware the last such celebration was held in 2013, though there have been various events honouring war veterans since then.
We can’t predict what format the event will take this year. But in the past the event has opened with congratulatory speeches from the Korean Ambassador and the Kingston Mayor, and a march-past of the veterans. There have been food stalls, folk games and musical entertainments. And there’s sometimes a raffle with edible prizes and maybe even a free flight to Korea for a lucky winner. The weather forecast looks good for this weekend, so give the event your support.
