Oh Tae-seok’s Romeo and Juliet returns

Romeo and Juliet is coming to Kingston as part of the 4th New Malden Arts Festival. Presented by Mokwha Theatre Company, the most famous theatre company in South Korea, the performance is only UK date in 2010 of this mesmerising production which sold out at the Barbican in 2006.

This highly stylised Romeo and Juliet paints the star-crossed lovers’ story with striking images, glorious martial arts sequences, live music and impressive dance, ritual and gesture. The performance is freely adapted from Shakespeare’s most famous play, and is a production of arresting beauty.

The tale of two warring families in Verona has a special resonance for the divided Korean peninsula, particularly in this 60th anniversary year of the North’s invasion.
