Sumi Jo: totally fabulous singing Mozart

Sumi JoSumi Jo was totally fabulous tonight at the Cadogan Hall with the Academy of Ancient Music. Highlight was the encore – Mozart’s elaborate variations on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, in a duet with flautist Rachel Brown

  1. I was so disappointed to see the person having enjoyed her cd’s. What an egotist! The music seemed to have nothing to do with Mozart and everything to do with Jo. Whilst she has a fantastic voice and technique, I was completely unmoved and completely piyu off by her kitsch costumes. I am afraid I found her voice hard and strident, none of the tenderness of Mozart, more as if she was singing Beethoven. Her whole self-important demeanour was gross and seeing her in person has put me off completely.

    1. Similarly, I made sure I came having heard a couple of her more intimate CDs, and I agree that hearing her live is very different. I guess one has to have a certain amount of diva-esque stage presence in order to pull off the drama of an operatic aria, but I must say I preferred the two concert arias. And most of all I enjoyed the two encores where she could really let her hair down and enjoy herself.
