Four Korean artists have been selected for the Bloomberg: New Contemporaries 2020 exhibition
The exhibition was due to run at the South London Gallery, 65-67 Peckham Rd, London, SE5 8UH. The most recent scheduling, following Covid-19 disruptions, was 13 Jan – 7 March 2021. The latest lockdown clearly makes that difficult.
For 2020, New Contemporaries launched a specially created digital platform – online now – showcasing the work of the 36 selected artists. Developed in dialogue with the artists and designed by Hato Press, the platform provides an opportunity to see some of the UK’s most dynamic contemporary art practices. Alongside artists’ images, texts, sounds and moving image work, new content such as workshops, artist blogs and vlogs and other digital projects will be added over the coming months.
The featured Korean artists are Sangbum Ahn, Jung Min Park, Jung Yun Roh and Kirsty Sim.

Sangbum Ahn
Statement
The primary focus of my work is the relationship between humans and non-humans, linked or ruptured by socio-political forces and technology. My approach is one of reinterpreting these ambivalent relationships into intimate narratives by disentangling and rearranging them into complex connections.

Statemenet
My work explores the process of interaction between the body and the world through repetition. Through ceramic organic forms with abstract carved drawings that contain watery sounds that echo from inside, I consider what has been accumulated in my body through a physical representation of another porous self.

Statement
My work explores the realm of social identities as both an immigrant manual worker and an artist. These are very different, perhaps incompatible roles, but for me they are a reality. I want to question society’s acceptance of multiple identities. In my moving image work, my daily drawings – made during my walks through the city and that record my labour as an artist – are juxtaposed with the narrative recounting my labour working in the kitchen at a Prêt A Manger.
