Last November, violinist Joo Yeon Sir won the Arts Club Karl Jenkins Classical Music Award, held in association with the radio station Classic FM. The award was launched in 2013 to identify the most exciting young performers in Britain.

According to Classic FM, the “candidates were judged based upon their technique, individualism, musicality, interpretation, communication and overall performance”. I’ve always liked the way Joo Yeon communicates with the audience, both through the music itself and in the easy manner in which she talks with them to introduce the works. And the chair of the judging panel Sir Karl Jenkins commented of her performances of Kabalevsky and Gershwin last year that she “displayed panache and vitality, and made an emotional connection with both the panel and the wider audience.”

As well as a cash prize of £4,000, Joo Yeon got a short piece composed for her by Sir Karl, called Lament for the Valley. She has now recorded this for Classic FM with her regular accompanist Irina Andrievsky, and it will be getting its premier broadcast tomorrow morning (Friday 16 Oct) on Classic FM on John Suchet’s morning show, airing at about 11:30am. She will also be performing Igor Frolov’s Concert Fantasy on Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.

Joo Yeon will also be performing Lament for the Valley live with orchestra on 30 October under the baton of the composer, making her Albert Hall debut.

Huge congratulations to Joo Yeon on her continued success.
