Chelsea Flower Show 2016 to include Korean-designed LG Smart Garden

Korean garden designer Jihae Hwang won gold medals at Chelsea in 2011 and 2012. It’s a tough act to follow, but let’s hope Hay Joung Hwang also wins success with her LG Smart Garden, entered in the Show Garden category this year. Her style is very different from Jihae’s, with clean, modern lines rather than the wild, natural look; but both have a focus on tranquility and attention to detail.

Features of the LG Smart Garden design include a sculptural wood-panelled water wall and a striking four-piece 5.5m cantilevered pergola. The extra dimension added by the electronics is to control irrigation and lighting remotely, as well as monitor nutrient and moisture levels in the soil.

Chelsea Flower Show is 24 – 28 May 2016. Book tickets here.

LG’s Smart Garden is inspired by the concept of Intelligent Homes and is intended to demonstrate that technology can be incorporated harmoniously into the house as well as to enhance the garden, providing additional functionality and convenience.

The design is intended to represent a Scandinavian lifestyle garden. The brighter colour choices within the minimalist design are softened by a planting scheme that has a natural character. The mix of herbaceous plants add a soft quality, while multi-stemmed trees provide privacy and filter the views from the house. The garden demonstrates contrasts between formal and informal as well as the balance between naturalism and artificialism – a metaphor for modern life.
