LKFF Teaser Screening: Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982

After having had to cancel the Kim Jiyoung screening earlier this year as we went into lockdown, the KCC is resurrecting the event as we gradually emerge. The official announcement on the film festival website promises an introduction, though currently there are no further details. The planned screening in March was going to be by Sarah Shin.

The screening will respect social distancing, with alternate rows being empty. Having taken a look at the Genesis cinema seating plan and booking system, it looks like if everyone who books is a singleton the theatre will be 75% empty.

Here’s the trailer:

How about using the event as an excuse to see friends you haven’t met up with for months?

Jung Yu-mi as Kim Jiyoung

Based on Cho Nam-joo’s landmark novel out now in the UK, the London Korean Film Festival and Genesis Cinema present Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982.

Kim Jiyoung is an ordinary Korean woman in her 30s, struggling to cope as a full-time mum and housewife. Although being married to the man she loves and raising a baby girl have proved to be more challenging than expected, Jiyoung believes she is utterly content.

However, her husband, Dae-hyeon is worried about her. He turns to a psychiatrist as life appears to hit Jiyoung harder than she realises, as she switches personas to mimick her mother, as well as her best friend who died while giving birth, and her late grandmother.

The riveting drama Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 raises questions about the societal role of modern women that have proved to be relevant across cultural boundaries. Starring Jung Yu-mi and Gong Yoo, acting together again after leading roles in megahit Train to Busan.
