The film and music festivals are ended, the State Visit over, and commiserations are due to Busan for missing out on the 2030 World Expo. December, thankfully, is less hectic than the last couple of months, with not much happening (as far as we know) apart from the following:
Exhibitions
- Han Collection has a lovely exhibition of ceramic figures to celebrate its move to Bury Place
- Heecheon Kim’s solo show Double Poser opens at the Hayward Gallery on 1 December
- The KCC’s winter exhibition celebrating 140 years of UK-Korea relations, 1883: A Journey Through the Archives, opens on 7 December
- The Korea-themed video projection show, Delight, continues in Borough Market, all month. Don’t expect to be overwhelmed.
Screenings
- Look out for the UK theatrical release of 12.12 The Day (서울의 봄) – covering Chun Doo-hwan’s coup – from 8 December
Everything else
- KCCUK hosts a talk on AI and Humanity on 7 December
- The BKS has its annual reception / dinner in the Houses of Parliament on 8 December
- There’s the monthly K-pop party at Fire Vauxhall on 1 December
- There’s an online Sewol commemoration event on 2 December
- Gemini plays at Heaven on 3 December
We haven’t spotted any books coming out in December apart from Sociolinguistics of the Korean Wave: Hallyu and Soft Power by Lionel Wee and Nora Samosir pub Routledge. Let me know what books or events I’ve missed.
For light entertainment in the New Year, look out for Kim’s Convenience at Park Theatre from 8 January. Meanwhile, have a restful break.
