Korean folk game and craft sessions at the KCCUK

I’m always mystified when Jegichagi (제기차기) is glossed as “Korean Hacky Sack”. Has anyone in the UK ever heard of, or played, Hacky Sack? Still, I suppose “Korean Hacky Sack” is more concise than “keepie-uppie with a big floppy shuttlecock”…

Korean folk games

Join The KCC team for a series of craft events exploring traditional Korean folk games, inspired by the global popularity of ‘Squid Game.’ We’ll delve into the history and hands-on experience of these cultural treasures.

Featured Sessions:

Ddakji & Jegichagi (28th March 2025)

Ddakji (딱지): A classic game where players use folded paper tiles to flip their opponent’s tiles.
Jegichagi (제기차기): A Korean version of hacky sack, challenging players to keep a ‘jegi’ (shuttlecock) airborne with their feet.

Yutnori (18th April 2025)

Yutnori (윷놀이): A traditional board game using four wooden sticks (‘yut sticks’) to move tokens, aiming to be the first to return all tokens to the starting point.

Chungsa Chorong (30th May 2025)

Cheongsa Chorong (청사초롱): A traditional lantern used historically for illumination at night by officials and guests, and also prominently featured in wedding ceremonies.

This event offers a fun and engaging exploration of Korean folk games and traditional culture through hands-on activities.
