Korean artists feature in no fewer than six productions at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Something for everyone. Full details below:

Binari — The Spirit of the Beat @ The Old College Quad

Don’t miss this passionate and colourful performance showcasing the unique heritage and spirited origins of traditional Korean culture. Lose yourself in the powerful beats and dynamic rhythms of the drums. Binari: The Spirit of the Beat will intrigue audiences bringing the mesmerizing and synchronised sounds of the Orient into a spectacular performance using dynamic percussion, energetic singing and the rituals of the ancient arts. It is one of the oldest Korean traditions — so make sure you come along and feel the beat!

Break Out – Extreme Dance Comedy @ Assembly Hall
World premiere • 2 – 25 August
The new show from the makers of Fringe Favourites Jump! The hottest B-Boy dance moves mixed with stunning gymnastics and hilarious visual comedy. Featuring a cast of top-quality performers including some of Korea’s leading B-Boy dancers, Break Out promises to be a fun-packed night out, complete with spectacular dance moves. The great escape!

Somewhere Else @ Dance Base

Revelation of Avignon festival of 2006, with Fluid, Korean choreographer Misook Seo creates poetry with dance in this lovely duet, inviting your mind to travel far into the universe and deep inside your soul. Unconsciously you feel somewhere else, or maybe close to yourself…
Part of Global, a quadruple bill of dance premieres of global proportions.

Fusing spectacular street dance and side-splitting comedy Spin Odyssey features the internationally renowned Korean b-boy team Last For One. Loosely based on the epic Greek poem The Odyssey this production is a hilarious mix of dazzling b-boying and Buster Keaton-esque slapstick comedy. A rip-roaring show jam packed with laughs!

Sadari Movement Laboratory - WoyzeckSadari Movement Laboratory (in association with AsiaNow Productions)
Woyzeck@ Assembly Aurora Nova
2 – 27 August (except Tuesdays)
Sadari Movement Laboratory transforms George Büchner’s play about a young soldier driven mad by inhuman military discipline and social deprivation into a new physical and visual language in this Korean production. Using wooden chairs and the dynamic Astor Piazzola’s tango this Woyzeck is both surprising and deeply moving.

  1. Shame. But he would only cancel at the last minute 😀

    Interesting that 2 of the 6 acts involve B-boys. I’d like to be able to catch Spin Odyssey, which I missed when it was in London earlier this year. But Edinburgh’s a bit of a way to go and I need to store up my days off for things like the conferences at SOAS.
