The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the UK presents the upcoming exhibition of Najeon & Ottchil, Korean Crafts for Millennia, from 5th November to 14th November 2019 at Asia House in London. The exhibition is hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the UK, and is organised by Korean Royal Heritage Gallery and Association of Royal Crafts Culture. Celebrating a continuous cooperation and friendship between Korea and the United Kingdom, this exhibition of Korean craftsman marks 20 years since Queen Elizabeth II visited South Korea, and the 70th year of the Republic of Korea’s re-establishment of diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom.
With a long history of crafts, UK has contributed to a cultural exchange, introducing Korean traditional crafts and their value. Accordingly, Najeon & Ottchil, Korean Crafts for Millennia comprises 30 crafts from most skilled 30 masters working in Najeon (Mother of Pearl) and Ottchil (Lacquer) have been invited and there, Korean traditional patterns and decorations, oriental philosophy as well as modern aesthetics are found in their works. Through this tradition of Korean crafts, this exhibition presents audience with the opportunity to encounter Najeon & Ottchil in all their glory whilst taking a glimpse at the excellent technology, elaboration, and unique beauty. In particular, the works which apply a lacquer technique to Korea’s Hanji Jiseung craft used traditional paper twisted into string and European egg art, another field of crafts, are considered examples of artistic expansion and graft.
As an associated event, a special Lecture will take place on 5 November ahead of the Opening Reception, demonstrating Korean traditional crafts and providing opportunities for mutual communication through Workshop that allows participations to experience themselves. Like Lacquerwares, which have a brilliant history for over a thousand years and preserved its value, this exhibition will be a chance to strengthen the history of Korean traditional crafts and cultural exchange.
