In March this year Arts Council Korea announced that Koo Jeong A would represent Korea in the 2024 Venice Biennale. Danish artistic director Jacob Fabricius and Korean curator Lee Seol-hui were appointed to curate the project, which is entitled “Odorama Cities”.

According to the Korea Times, the 2024 project will transform ‘the entirety of the [Korean] pavilion’s cylindrical steel building into an immersive, scent-centric environment. Pieces with distinct aromas that represent Korea’s different cities will be installed throughout the structure to take the visitors on a “Korean scent journey.”‘ London art-lovers may remember how the artist transformed a disused part of Charing Cross underground station in 2016, giving it a fresh, powder-like fragrance.

The curators of the 2024 Venice project have issued an open call inviting Koreans to submit their scent memories of home, which may end up being featured in the final installation. Memories from both North and South are welcome. Read on for more details.

How do you remember the smell of your city or hometown?

Please, send us your Korean scent memory. The artist is looking for any kind of scent description.

Everybody that contributes with their scent memory will be credited in the exhibition’s catalogue. 10 selected scent memories will be awarded.

Deadline for submission has been extended to 20 August 2023. Submissions can be made via the following links (opens in a new tab as a google form). The submission takes the form of a brief questionnaire and will take a couple of minutes.
